Meet Our Doctors

We know that having the ability to communicate easily with your physician is important and comforting. As a result, many of our cardiologists speak multiple languages, including Spanish, Italian, and Tagalog.

Doctor and Patient

Christopher Di Giorgio, MD

About: Dr. Di Giorgio is board certified in cardiovascular disease, nuclear cardiology, echocardiography, vascular ultrasound interpretation (RPVI), and internal medicine. His clinical interests include coronary artery disease, valvular disease, heart failure, hyperlipidemia, preventive heart care, and women with heart disease.

Education and Training: He received his MD from Stony Brook University School of Medicine and did his residency in internal medicine at St. Luke’s–Roosevelt Hospital Center (Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons), followed by a cardiology fellowship at Rutgers–University Hospital.

Research: He is a co-investigator, representing Englewood Health, on a national cardiac clinical trial and is a co-author on several research publications evaluating cardiovascular disease treatment.

Languages Spoken: In addition to English, Dr. Di Giorgio speaks Italian and Spanish.

Joesph De Gregorio, MD, FACC, FSCAI

About: Dr. De Gregorio is chief of invasive cardiology at Englewood Health and a member of the Englewood Health Physician Network. He is board certified in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology. He specializes in open and minimally invasive surgery and catheter procedures, such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).

Dr. De Gregorio is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American College of Physicians, and College of Chest Physicians. He is also a director of the annual Complex Interventional Cardiovascular Therapy conference.

Education and Training: Dr. De Gregorio received his MD from SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse. He did his internship at Bellevue Hospital Center, his internal medicine residency at NYU Langone Medical Center, a cardiology fellowship at Westchester County Medical Center and an interventional cardiology fellowship at Centro Cuore Columbus in Milan.

Languages Spoken: In addition to English, he speaks Italian and Spanish.

Bart M. De Gregorio, MD

About: Dr. De Gregorio is board certified in cardiovascular disease and internal medicine. He specializes in cardiology. He has particular interest in preventive cardiology, and heart disease in women.

Education and Training: Dr. De Gregorio received his MD from Università Di Milano Facoltá De Medicine e Chirurgia in Italy. He completed his residency at New Rochelle Hospital Medical Center and his cardiology fellowship at St. Michael’s Medical Center.

Languages Spoken: In addition to English, he speaks Italian and Spanish.

Carlos Alfonso, MD

About: Dr. Alfonso is board certified in internal medicine, cardiology and nuclear cardiology.

Education and Training: He received his MD from the University of Santos Tomas in the Philippines. He did his internal medicine residency at Seton Hall University School of Graduate Medical Education and his residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, Paterson, New Jersey, where he was chief medical resident. He then held a cardiology fellowship at Seton Hall, where he was chief cardiology fellow.

Languages Spoken: In addition to English, Dr. Alfonso speaks Spanish and Tagalog.

Asad Cheema, MD

About: Dr. Cheema is board certified in cardiac electrophysiology. He specializes in diagnosing and treating heart rhythm disorders. In addition to winning numerous top-doctor honors, Dr. Cheema is medical director of the Cardiac Electrophysiology Laboratories at Englewood Health.

Education and Training: He received his MD from Nishtar Medical College, in Pakistan, and completed is residency at St. Barnabas Medical Center. Dr. Cheema went on to hold a cardiac electrophysiology fellowship at Baystate Medical Center, and both a cardiology fellowship and interventional cardiology fellowship at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.

Languages Spoken: In addition to English, Dr. Cheema speaks Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi.

Domenic L. Mariano, MD

About: Dr. Mariano is board certified in cardiovascular disease and certified in cardiovascular computed tomography and nuclear cardiology. He specializes in cardiac rehabilitation, cardiovascular computed tomography, nuclear cardiology and preventive heart care.

Education and Training: Dr. Mariano received his DO from Nova Southeastern University, in Florida. He completed a residency at St. Michael’s Medical Center and a fellowship at St. Michael’s Medical Center.

Languages Spoken: In addition to English, Dr. Mariano speaks Italian.

James L. Amato JR., MD

About: Dr. Amato is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular medicine and interventional cardiology. He is certified in adult transthoracic plus stress echocardiography. Nuclear cardiology, preventive heart care and women with heart disease are his special interests.

Education: He received his MD from UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School. He completed a residency at New York Hospital. He held fellowships at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, Cardiology.

Languages Spoken: In addition to English, Dr. Amato speaks Italian and Spanish.

Michael Wilderman, MD, FACS

About: Michael Wilderman MD, FACS, is the Chief of Endovascular Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center.  He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery in both General Surgery and Vascular Surgery. He is one of the leaders in the field on Fenestrated Aortic Stenting, and now serves as a regional and national proctor for this procedure. Dr. Wilderman’s other areas of expertise include the open and endovascular treatment of Carotid Artery Disease, minimally invasive treatments of lower extremity arterial disease, and Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.

Education: Dr. Wilderman received his medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He then completed his general surgery residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he served as the Administrative Chief Resident during his final year. He then completed the prestigious Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Fellowship of Washington University, in St. Louis, MO where he focused on the open and endovascular treatments of complex aortic pathologies, in both the chest and the abdomen.

David O'Connor, MD, FACS

About: Dr. O'Connor is the Director of Vascular Research and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center. Dr. O’Connor is a double board certified vascular and endovascular surgeon in full time clinical practice since 2012. Dr. O'Connor has particular expertise in the treatment of complex abdominal, thoracic and thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms, aortic dissection, carotid artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, venous diseases, vascular tumors, thoracic outlet syndrome, renal and visceral disease, and rare vascular disorders.

Education: Dr. O'Connor attended medical school at the University of Miami School of Medicine, and was a recipient of the University of Miami Board of Trustees Scholarship. After completing his medical studies, he went on to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s Montefiore Medical Center for residency training in general surgery. He obtained further specialized training in vascular and endovascular surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, one of the premier vascular surgery training programs in the United States.
